Watermelon Lime Slushies!

Thank you for stopping by little island studios, please subscribe by email to follow along in family fun!

Happy, Happy Summer!  It's crazy hot here and the kids are wanting a cool down drink and this Watermelon Lime Slushy hits the spot!  Let the kids help with this one - cubing watermelon, squeezing the limes and adding in the syrup.  We also added some vodka to this and well...this is our new favorite happy hour drink!

Ingredients -

Watermelon - large
Limes - 2
Simple Syrup
Ice - lots of ice!

The night before you make these drinks, make sure your watermelon is in the fridge overnight.
Fill your high powered blender with large watermelon chunks
Squeeze the limes over top of the watermelon
Add 1 tablespoon of simple syrup
Add 1.5 cups of crushed ice on top

Tweak - if necessary

Pour the kids their drinks and make sure to leave out extra that they will surely want.

For Moms & Dads -

After the kids have theirs, blend in a shot of vodka or rum to the rest and pour in your cup.
Obviously don't get the alcohol mix up with the kid's version.

Add a bit of chili pepper to add some heat to this icy slushy!

My Notes -

As stated above - make sure the watermelon has been in fridge all night.  It makes the drink and the extra watermelon is cold for the kids to eat wedges.
While you're at it - put the vodka in the freezer to get chilled for your summer drinks.
We just love Reyka Icelandic small batch vodka.
Get the kids involved with this recipe.
Kids can cut the watermelon (with a butterknife) into chunks. Obviously this is after you've cut open the watermelon.  If this is not obvious, please stay out of the kitchen all-together.
Kids can squeeze the limes.

This is not sponsored. Just delicious and our new summer favorite drink!

Boozy Cherry-Lemonade!

Thank you for stopping by little island studios, please subscribe by email to follow along in family fun!

Summer is here! It's here, it's finally here!  We wait all year for cherry season and to get organic cherries...well, that is a treat all it's own!   The kids and I were making yummy cherry-lemonades - a fun drink that the kids can squeeze, stir and pour all themselves.  When they took their drinks outside, I found, if you just add a little bit of've got a whole other experience!  Happy summer to me!
Ingredients -

Fresh cherries - juiced (organic, if available) - 6 oz
Lemon - juice from 2 large lemons & extra slices for garnish
Simple syrup - 2 oz
Carbonated Water - like Perrier -8 oz
Ice - Crushed or Cubed

Simple syrup is just equal parts of sugar and water.  Bring the mixture to almost a boil where the sugar melts.  Cool and keep extra in the fridge.  Use for any cocktails or drinks.

In small pitcher add-in cherry juice, lemon juice, simple syrup and stir.
Add-in carbonated water and stir gently

Taste and add more simple syrup, if needed.

Pour into serving glasses with ice.

For the boozy part - Add-in one shot of vodka per glass - stir gently

Top with halved cherries and lemon wedge.

Top with extra cherries and lemon wedge!

Organic Cherries is a short in season, but one of our most favorites!

Happy Summer!

My Notes -

Please follow us on Instagram for food, travel and fun!

I used to think I didn't like vodka.  I just do not like cheap vodka.
Try Reyka - you're welcome!

Pretty fruit holders are from Crate and Barrel

Celebrate The Men In Your Life!

Thank you for stopping by little island studios, please subscribe by email to follow along in family fun!

I think we need to express our appreciation for the men in our lives.   The world seems crazy right now and there is so much animosity towards men.  We need women AND men to play their roles for us to be successful as families and society in general.  Father's day is here -  please let the dads, husbands, grandpas, sons, brothers and friends around you who are getting it done, know how very much you value and appreciate them and all they do every day.

5 Ways To Show Appreciation

Cook his favorite meal and sit down to eat.

Say THANK YOU! Say I really appreciate what you do for us / me.

Do something he enjoys together.  If it's not your cup of tea...don't complain.

Rent the movie he wants to rent.  No, he really doesn't want to watch the "girly" movie that everyone will cry over but, has a great story written by that author.

Buy him a great adventure novel! Leap a breakthrough book is an awesome adventure he's sure to love. (no, this is not an affiliate link or sponsored)

Simple Summer Style!

Thank you for stopping by little island studios, please subscribe by email to follow along in family fun!

This is a sponsored post - opinions are my own!

Summer style can and should be simple - all summer long!  Basics that work and look amazing  all-the-while you are on-the-go, running after the kids with hot coffee that is spilling all over you is key to a great looking summer! Here are some of our most favorites!

Simple things that look good and work well is the key to things running smoothly getting ready in the morning.  Happy music and easy accessories are the "extras" that we can't do without.

A good pair of jeans is hard to find and a great pair is even harder!  We found these prAna boyfriend style jeans and made of organic cotton.  The fit and absence of toxins next to my skin makes these jeans our most favorites. The prAna Honour Jeans style is our favorite prAna jeans and perfect for a simple summer style!

Sunhat is from Aventura and can smooch in our tote and be just fine!

prAna code S17TRAVELLS for 15% off and free shipping over $100!

My Summer Favorite Styles -

prAna - for the perfect jeans - boyfriend fit and wash!  And this Beach Bag - we bought in Boulder at the prAna store - organic and huge - the best bag!  The Honour jeans are completely perfect for me in every way!

Crunchi Makeup - this is it!  I have searched for years for the perfect lip gloss - a gloss that is not sticky, perfect color and zero nasties! (you would not believe what is in most makeup!)  My favorite is Namaste for everyday color - pretty neutral, goes with everything and great for on my way out the door.  However, the Summer Nights color (appropriately named) is absolutely the color to show off your tan and for summer fun!  The brushes are the best I've used and the mascara is excellent and can hold it's own to show off your face!

Acure - the Coconut Body Oil Spray - you'll see.  Trust me.

BKR Water Bottle - it's glass and colorful and I seem to be somewhat obsessed with collecting every single color.  Beautiful skin from the inside out!  Clean water matters - no fluoride, toxins and reverse osmosis.  Add in your minerals and you're good to go!

John Masters - the Sea Mist spray.  I grew up on the ocean and there is nothing more than I like than salt in my hair.  This spray adds volume and make you feel like you can do anything!  Okay, perhaps that's a stretch, but it al least will make you yearn to be seaside.  Just try it.

Sunglasses - choose 100% protection from UVA and UVB rays and I love large one for summer.  I feel mysterious in them.  Or at least hope that's what people will think...not noticing I'm really wearing them because I've gotten little sleep from the noisy neighbors in the city and am all jacked-up on caffeine.  Yes, mysterious sounds so much better.  I bought these at Whole Foods in a hurry.  Long story that involves crying over a donut.  Doesn't everyone cry over a donut at least once a week?

Birkenstocks - well...because....Birkenstocks.

Juice Beauty - even in the summer, slather moisturizer on your face - daily!  Loving this Apple Moisturizer!

California Baby - hair moisturizer and sunblock which is not shown because husband had the nerve to take to work.  Like what am I supposed to use whilst I'm laying in the sun, reading my Garden and Gun laying in the sun watching the kids play?  *gasp*
Great sunblock - goes on pretty sheer.  Not gloppy and white like toothpaste all over your face.

Summer Reads - at the pool, in the yard or at the beach, I don't usually like novel reading.  I'm distracted watching the kids and the dog and I really like light reading.  Garden & Gun it is!

1 Good Deed Bracelets can make you seem all-pulled-together in an instant!  Try the Spicy Red Color!  Yes, the black is shown...that's because I didn't want to take off the Spicy red one.  I'm selfish that way.

Music - We like the Amazon Tap (the Amazon Eco freaks us out...always listening! A bit too weird for me) The Tap runs on bluetooth and sounds amazing!  We love Jimmy Buffet, the 70s station on Prime music and quite frankly the soundtrack to Walter Mitty makes us pretty darn happy!

Yes, for the most part this blog post is sponsored. (some of these things are mine) That's my job to collaborate and find awesome products to share so you don't have to waste money on things that don't work or fit.  Opinions are always my own. I would not suggest things I did not use and really like!

Hattie & Hudson Picture Book Giveaway!

Thank you for stopping by little island studios, please subscribe by email to follow along in family fun

We just opened Hattie & Hudson today by author and illustrator, Chris Van Dusen and could not be happier!  It is the happiest summer adventure - a cabin on the lake in the woods and a mysterious wonderful "monster" - simply delightful!
The art absolutely brings you in and the story between Hattie and her new friend, Hudson is so much fun.  This book reminds me of older simpler days.  We all really love Hattie & Hudson!

If I am headed to your kiddos birthday party this summer...this is what she / he is getting!
Don't see that as a you can look forward to it! :)

Hattie McFadden is a born explorer. Every morning she grabs her life jacket and paddles out in her canoe to discover something new on the lake, singing a little song on her way. When her singing draws up from the depths a huge mysterious beast, everyone in town is terrified — except Hattie, who looks into the creature’s friendly, curious eyes and knows that this is no monster. So Hattie sneaks out at night to see the giant — whom she names Hudson — and the two become friends. But how can she make the frightened, hostile townspeople see that Hudson isn’t scary or dangerous at all? Chris Van Dusen brings his colorful, perspective-bending artwork to this satisfying new story about acceptance, friendship, and sticking up for those who are different. - Candlewick Press

Between the story and the engaging artwork, this is one of our new favorites!

Lemony Chicken Skillet Bake!

Thank you for stopping by little island studios, please subscribe by email to follow along in family fun!

One of the happiest and easiest meals I like to cook is a bake.  Everything in one skillet - chicken, veggies and spice!  One pan and little fuss it's perfect for Sunday supper or on a night where everyone is busy and you need "fast food"!  This bake with dill and lemon is one of my favorite flavor combinations.

Ingredients -

2 pounds of chicken thighs (or whatever pieces you want)
5 oz of bone broth (see below)
Carrots - one batch
Orange beets - one batch (equals about 3-4)
Dill - handful of fresh
Lemons - 2
Potatoes - 4
Sea Salt

Bake -

Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Peel your carrots, potatoes and beets.
Chop your veggies to chunks or bit sized - your choice
Grab your skillet and place the chicken pieces along the bottom.
Slice one lemon and place slices over the tops of the chicken pieces.
Place your chopped veggies on top.
Wedge one lemon and squeeze all over the veggies and chicken and then leave wedges in side of pan.
Chop and sprinkle fresh dill over entire dish.
Sprinkle sea salt and pepper over entire dish.
Add bone broth into skillet.
Place into oven and let cook for around 40 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and veggies are soft to eat.

Let cool for 5 minutes and enjoy - don't forget the delicious juice at the bottom of the pan!

My Notes -

For this meal I did not make my own bone broth - Obviously or this would not be quick!
I used Pacific foods and it is delicious!
We use  Staub (yes, I'm obsessed with them)
Blue floral napkin is from Williams Sonoma

Uncommon Goods For An Uncommon Gift - Everyone Will Love!

We are absolutely thrilled to collaborate with Uncommon Goods for this post and looking forward to bringing you more amazing ideas for the ultimate perfect gift!

I take gift buying very seriously.  Anyone can grab a gift card to the local mass market store on the way to a party. And quite frankly, everyone at the party knows who you are.  If you have the privilege of buying someone a special gift, why would you not put thought into the gift?  A gift that shows thought, class all while making it obvious you thought about that specific person when you bought it!   We all know the ones who just "grab whatever" on their way out.  Don't be that one.  Buy with thought at Uncommon Goods!
If you follow me on Instagram you already know I'm crazy for color and I constantly travel!  A water color map of the world could not be a more perfect gift for me!  It came extremely well wrapped with an info card on the artist.  Truly a perfect gift for me!

Kids Bedding for Summer & The Futon Shop Giveaway!

We are so very pleased to collaborate with The Futon Shop for this review & giveaway!

When I first started parenting oh-so-many years ago, I don't think I thought too much about below-the-surface things.  However, mom's, as we grow and become aware of things, we learn that below-the-surface matters!  It matters what is in our food, on our clothing, in our lawns and certainly below the sheets on our beds!  Humans sleep between 7-10 hours every single night (obviously this various with new moms...that get no sleep and teenagers that simply love and need to sleep lots!).

Why would we ever think that it does not matter what we are breathing in night-after-night.

This is why I am so appreciative for The Futon Shop who makes the most amazing mattress that I feel good with my kids and myself sleeping on!

This twin mattress is The Futon Shop Moonlight and is made with organic materials and organic natural latex!  This mattress shown is on top of bed slats - nothing more is needed!   Add some fun organic summer shark sheets and you are good-to-go!
The Futon Shop Moonlight Mattress, fun sheets and matching organic pillows from The Futon Shop, and we are ready for healthy summer rest and fun!
What we sleep on matters and kids deserve the best!

My Notes:

The Futon Shop mattresses are heavy with natural and organic materials. They are nothing like your mattress at home that is full of synthetic materials with who-knows-what in them.

This is the ingredient sheet for the Moonlight Mattress!
Chemical free, petro-free, GOLS certified organic Dunlop latex - the Moonlight Mattress is nothing short of spectacular!

The Futon Shop makes real, quality mattresses! No short cuts and they make them here in the USA - California to be exact.  The wool they use is naturally antibacterial and is ethically harvested (unlike certain brands of wool lined shoes)

Their mattress are top quality.

No chemicals in my home matters and probably most important in our mattresses and food!  I had been so used to these cookie cutter mattresses that weigh nothing and smell like chemicals. (they always make my stomach hurt)

Now I know chemical free and healthy mattresses are out there and are more superior than I ever imagined.  I will never go back to "conventional" mattresses. Ever.

Check out The Futon Shop's entire selection of mattresses - all are amazing and with materials that you can truly feel good about your family breathing-in every night!
We have an amazing twin futon mattress to giveaway!

This Chemical Free - Pure Comfort Futon Mattress designed with 733 micro coils, natural pure virgin wool and USDA certified organic cotton providing superior comfort and support, and can be used on a futon frame or a traditional platform bed

Our Giveaway!

The Futon Shop is giving away a Pure Comfort Chemical Free Wool / Organic Cotton Mattress (ingredient list is above) Woot!  I am so very happy for the opportunity to give this mattress away - SO versatile for futon frame or bed slats or box spring!  And the comfort is second to none - your back and body need this!  Loads of ways to enter.  US only please.  Prize is shipped via The Futon Shop.  Little Island Studios is not responsible for shipping, use or if you want to lay in bed all day and read because you have never been so comfy!  Enter often, share and good luck!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

This is a sponsored post.  Opinions are my own.  I would never recommend if I didn't fully love and believe in The Futon Shop's ethics, products and company in general!
